What are the major differences between horticulture and intensive agriculture?
Also, what are the consequences of these differences?
Horticulture is less invasive towards that land. When people refer to slash and burn (when a trees in an area are cut and burned to release nutrients) they are talking about horticulture. Horticulture also has a fallow period, or time in which the land is not used and allowed to rest. Though horticultural societies sometime don’t return to fields they have depleted. Agriculture is different as it the has the introduction of fertilizers instead of slashing and burning. Fields are used again and again until they are depleted. To counter act this farmers often rotate crops (different crops take different nutrients out of soil and some even put some back) instead of rotating fields like horticulturists.
